EDITORIAL SERVICES FOR FICTION AND NONFICTION:
Have you written an article or book? Have you considered getting it professionally edited? Do you feel as if you don't know the first thing about editing? You're wrong. You do know the most important thing. Realizing that a manuscript needs further work is the first sign of competence in a writer. An editor can guide you in that work, or, in many cases, do it for you.
Every successful writer has an editor. Stephen King, Barak Obama, and Oprah all have editors. Hemingway had an editor, as did Faulkner, Fitzgerald and Jane Austen. Thomas Jefferson and Shakespeare were edited too. So if you think you need an editor you are in good company.
What does an editor do? Every writer is different, and every project has different needs, so an editor tailors his or her services to you and the work you've done. Maybe you need help with grammar or syntax. This requires proofing and copyediting. Maybe you're having trouble with your plot or characters. An editor will spot the problems, and either correct them then-and-there, or, if you prefer, point them out to you and suggest ways for you to correct them. A competent editor will respect your strengths as a writer. If you've done a good job structuring your story, your editor will see that, and help you make your structure stand out. If you write good dialogue your editor will show you how to exploit that talent to better tell your story. You might be tired of your book. You might feel it's best to turn it over to an editor, and let him or her do all the revisions. Or maybe you want to revise it yourself, but you need a professional critique to guide you.
You might not want to do any writing at all, or you might only want to do some of it. That's when ghostwriting comes into play. This is when you give your editor the basic information, and he or she does the writing for you. Politicians, celebrities, and business leaders have always used ghost writers, and in the last two decades many first-time authors have hired them too. The process varies, but I can give you details via email or phone.
I do all of these tasks and more. I edit, critique, rewrite, and ghostwrite, whatever is necessary to bring out the best in your story. I can also advise you on approaching agents and publishers, and on the best ways to self-publish. I, and my fellow editors, work with fiction and nonfiction of most any kind, in books, articles, or essays.
NOTES ON MATTERS OF CONCERN TO WRITERS:
Your work is your own. We have no claim on it. When you send us a manuscript you are not giving up any rights to it. When we edit it, if you decide you don't like the editing, you can change it back.
Your work with us is private. We do not ask for credit. If you are pleased with our work we might ask about the possibility of a reference, but even that is only a respectful request.
You don't pay us anything until you have agreed to specific work for a specific price. We don't charge you anything until we've seen the work, edited a sample, and discussed it with you. Once we've seen the job and done a small sample we tell you how much it will cost, how long it will take, and when you can expect to see edited sections, and the finished project. With longer projects (usually books) we break up the work into sections, and you pay in installments scheduled in accordance with the work you receive from us. What you should and should not expect:
You should receive editing that respects your writing. The changes might be great or small, but they should be aimed at helping you communicate your ideas to your readers clearly and concisely.
You should not expect editing to turn your book into a bestseller. Only the public can do that. Nor can we guarantee that any given publisher will buy your work. Only a publisher can do that. You can expect editing to give your book a better chance at success. As one of Stephen King's editors once said about submitting unedited work to a publisher: It's like walking into a job interview with your fly open. A good editor can help you avoid such a fate.
Our policy on academic work: If you are in school, you should not expect editors to write your term papers. Some might do this, but not us. If you are working on a school-assigned term paper, thesis, essay, story, academic article or dissertation, and you want our help, you will have to show us that you're asking for help with the full knowledge and approval of your teacher, adviser, or journal publisher. Many publishers of academic articles have guidelines for the editorial process, and we are always glad to help you follow those guidelines. Some teachers allow their students to work with an editor if they feel the process will help them become better writers. In these situations you, the author, usually works at least as hard as we do.
CONTACT US: You can call me at 410-433-xxxx. Ask for Pete. If I'm not here you will get the Bear Press voice mail. Leave your name and number. I will call you back, and we can begin to explore ways to bring your project to life.
