Repairs and maintains plumbing systems for all toilet rooms, laboratories, mechanical rooms, swimming pools, kitchens, distilled and demineralized water distribution systems, safety eye wash and deluge shower piping systems, as well as the underground sub soil drainage, sewer, acid waste piping and dilution basins, and campus water main distribution systems.Inspects work site to determine repairs needed, method of repair and supplies and tools required.Lays out, fabricates and assembles piping and fixtures required.Transports materials, tools and equipment to the work site and installs and/or repairs piping system.10%: Installs Plumbing Piping systems in new laboratories, as well as revisions to existing piping in mechanical equipment areas and space acquired in older buildings.10%: Installs plumbing piping systems as well as piping revisions for the remodeling and additions to the various buildings of the campus.Inspects work site to determine method and place of installation, and determines tools, equipment and supplies to be used.Plans, lays out, fabricates and assembles piping and fixtures required.Transports materials, tools and equipment to the work site and installs and/or repairs piping system.1%: Performs related duties as assigned.*KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE JOB* * Knowledge of plumbing piping systems and maintenance of same. * Knowledge of lawn sprinkler and fire protection Systems and their maintenance. * Knowledge of the uses and application of materials for the work to be performed. * Skill in the use of mathematics and the ability to read blue prints. * Skill in the installation of copper, steel, glass, and plastic piping. * Skill in the welding of hangers and supports for piping and appurtenances. * A working understanding of the State ofMaryland plumbing code as well as a current license as a plumber in the State of Maryland.*POSITION RESPONSIBILITY*Direct and Indirect Supervision Received Job assignments are received from the Supervisor/Manager. TheSupervisor/Manager spot checks work by going to the job site to check progress.Guidelines Followed Recognized procedures and techniques of the trade gained through minimum experience required along with the Plumbers Manual (of formulas, tables, graphs, pipe properties, etc.) are basic work guidelines. All work per-formed must comply with the plumbing codes and regulations of the City ofFrederick and the State of Maryland. The incumbent is also expected to follow Hood College Policy and Rules, State University Civil Service System Statutes and Rules, the Physical Plant Department Work Rules, and written directives from the Superintendent of Building Maintenance.*SCOPE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITY*Complexity Plumbers must select materials and techniques for fabrication based upon the type of piping system. Sequence of work is based upon common construction and maintenance scheduling and practices.Effect on Others Plumbers install and repair plumbing piping systems for the University. Therefore, they may affect the comfort of all facility users. They affect the ability of Plant Operating Engineers to keep steam plants functioning at maximum efficiency. For specialized piping systems in the hospital, medical and research laboratories and kitchens, they affect the ability of staff to complete work involving use of piping systems.*PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS*Personal Contacts Personal contacts are with Plant Operating Engineers, other tradesmen and University Staff.Purpose Personal contacts are with Plant Operating Engineers for the purpose of discussing needed repairs or installation of Plumbing Piping Systems. Other tradesmen are contacted to coordinate work. Other personal contacts are with University staff in areas where work is in progress.*ENVIRONMENTAL DEMAND*Physical Requirements Plumbers must be able to individually lift up to 75 pounds and to lift and transport piping and equipment with others in excess of 200 pounds. They may use chain falls and come along for heavier lifting operations. They must be able to push and pull heavy loads listed above (also push and pull a 500 pound tool box on wheels). They must be able to stoop and bend for long periods of time and work in confined spaces.Work Environment Plumbers must be able to work in the steam tunnels and pits. Heat in steam areas can be in excess of 100 f. Work in pipe shafts, crawl spaces, and other confined spaces requiring stooping, crawling, and bending. Work may also take place in controlled environments such as isolation laboratories or patient care and treatment areas. Under special circumstances, protective equipment and garb may be required. Work can take place on roofs or require the use of a ladder or other elevated work platforms and may require working out of doors in inclement weather.Comments Shifts for Plumbers are 7:00 am to 4:00 pm All equipment is provided by the University.Understanding of job safety on the work site in the use of ladders and scaffolding.*Minimum Education Required:* High School graduate or equivalent. Formal vocational education/training in operations and maintenance of boilers, chillers, turbines, generators or control systems is desired.*Minimum Experience Required:* Four (4) years training/job experience operating and maintaining pumps, cooling towers, boilers, chillers, turbines, generators or control systems.*Minimum Skills/Aptitudes Required:**Physical Standards:* Full range mobility outdoors, indoors and in confining areas, using stairs, ramps or ladders. Manual dexterity with power and hand tools. Visual acuity. Must be able to stand and work as long as 12 hours in different positions. Handle 40-60 pound bags of salt for storage and replacement of salt levels in brine tanks. Handles 30-45 gallon barrels of soap and lubricants for storage and use in various equipment.*//*
