Associate Scientist III, In Vivo Cytogenetics Req Number: sial-xxxxxxxx Location(s): Rockville, MD The Associate Scientist III (AS III) will perform a wide variety of assays or tests required to characterize product or material safety. He/she will make scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks/documentation and ensure all documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. He/she will maintain an understanding of technological principles and applications of the organization's services. This positon has a primary focus on slide scorin gfrom both in vitro micronucleus and in vitro chromosomal abberration assays. RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibilities will include: Evaluate mouse and rat bone marrow and blood smears for the presence of micronuclei in bone marrow and blood cells using light and fluorescent microscopes. Assess mitotic index from rat bone marrow and blood smears. Evaluate mouse and rat bone marrow and blood smears for the presence of chromosome aberrations in bone marrow and blood cells using a microscope. Communicate to the Study Director or Laboratory Supervisor important factors that may affect the outcome of an experiment (i.e., re-evaluations or errors). Must follow all regulations including, but not limited to, GLP, SOW, SOPs, and USDA Animal Welfare Act. Responsible for having a broad working knowledge of lab policies and assays Responsible for scoring IVMN and CAb. Slides. (Primary focus) Conducts pre-designed assays using basic laboratory techniques and skills Independently conducts assigned test procedures within constraints of lab scheduling Follow SOPs and relevant compliance regulations in regards to safety procedures, documentation, and scientific responsibility Independently analyzes data and interprets results Advise supervisor of factors that may affect quality and usefulness of data Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve standard laboratory techniques, protocols, processes and equipment Demonstrate consistently good communication and interpersonal skills with employees, management and clients (where applicable) Assist in writing/reviewing SOPs Assist in training new staff members in performance of routine lab tasks Serve as a mentor to junior staff members Use and maintain scientific equipment, instrumentation and computer systems Other duties as assigned MA/MS in scientific discipline with 2 years lab experience BA/BS in scientific discipline with 4-6 years of experience AA degree in scientific discipline with 6-8 years of experience Or Equivalent scientific experience About Sigma-Aldrich: Sigma-Aldrich is a leading Life Science and High Technology company whose biochemical, organic chemical products, kits and services are used in scientific research, including genomic and proteomic research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical development, the diagnosis of disease and as key components in pharmaceutical, diagnostics and high technology manufacturing.
