Research Associate II xxxx29 (NCI) (Job Number:xxxx29) Description: PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Core Genotyping Facility (CGF) is a high throughput genetics laboratory providing cutting edge technologies to the National Cancer Institute. Within the CGF, the Research and Development group is responsible for new technology evaluation and validation in addition to several cancer research-directed projects. JOB DESCRIPTION The candidate will be responsible for their own research projects that will encompass operation of various technology platforms, including (but not limited to) Life Technologies' Ion Torrent, Roche 454, Illumina MiSeq and HiSeq. The candidate will be responsible for basic molecular biology tools including PCR, Sequence Capture methods, ligation, fragment generation and cleaning as well as basic sterile/clean room laboratory techniques. Candidate, in addition to project and evaluation requirements, will be responsible for maintaining strict computer based record keeping and interfacing with multiple LIMS. Work with R&D Director & Manager, Bioinformatics Director and R&D technical staff and QA/QC personnel to develop, implement and perform laboratory processes in support of the Core Genotyping Facility. Provide technical guidance regarding the application, choice and use of the appropriate sequencing technology to existing and prospective customers. Demonstrate new applications and equipment to customers, troubleshoot issues relating to both existing and new applications and provide feedback to vendor and customer. Coordinate with R&D, and Commercial Vendors to implement updates to equipment, chemistry and processes. Handle problem recognition, research, resolution and follow up for routine and complex problems. Provide guidance to lower level technical personnel in performing experiments and analyzing data. Identify, research, optimize and implement new processes or technologies that serve to improve data quality or efficiency of production pipeline. Some assignments are performed independently after overall objectives, techniques and potential problems are discussed with the supervisor. Will require direct interactions with other laboratory supervisors from outside their program. Qualifications: BASIC QUALIFICATIONS - Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. - In addition to education requirements, a minimum of five (5) years genomics based laboratory experience. - The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in molecular biology or genetics/genomics, isolation and manipulation of DNA and RNA, PCR, gel electrophoresis, high throughput platforms, applications and technology, be familiar with usage of a LIMS, practiced at independent design and performance of experiments, capable of trouble shooting assay or production problems, and able to develop/optimize new assays or production methods under the direction of a lab supervisor or scientist. - The individual must be able to work closely with a team in a high paced environment with a high attention to detail. - Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills with proficiency in MS Excel, Word and Powerpoint required. - This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Experience with Illumina HiSeq and/or MiSeq, Roche (454), or Life PGM sequencer operation and maintenance is highly desired. - Work in a core/service facility a plus. - Experience with next gen sequencing development, troubleshooting, analysis, and laboratory automation with the ability to work independently or in a team, adapt to changing task priorities, and quickly learn new techniques and be able to train other personnel in those techniques with proficiency is preferred.
